Mont Blanc from the Aiguille du Midi, Sculptural Watercolour® by Prue Bishop, 60 x 80 x 5.5 cm F38, 2012. Digital.

The painting combines traditional watercolour with the depth and edges of the sculptural form introduced by Sculptural Watercolour®.

The image is of course flat, but nevertheless the light falling on the artwork casts natural shadows, conveying the essence of the three-dimensional nature of the original, even though the full effect can only be appreciated by viewing the actual painting.

The Aiguille du Midi 3800m is accessed by cable car from Chamonix, France and offers several viewpoints of a remarkable range of mountains. In our image of the painting, the Mont-Blanc is just inside this image with the peaks of Mont-Blanc du Tacul and Mont Maudit to the left.

Further to the left, in the foreground, the artist conveys to us a striking impression of a special group of rocks called "Les Gendarmes" (The Policemen) that are part of the Arete des Cosmiques: a popular route for those new to climbing.

The orange colouring of these granite rocks makes an eye-catching contrast with both the white of the background peaks and the dark grey of the sharp vertical rockface that continues a very long way below the bottom of the painting.

In the context of Global Warming, over the past 100 years, the Mont Blanc region has warmed an alarming 1.8 degrees, with most of this in recent decades.
