Schwarze-Lütschine and the Wetterhorn - Sculptural Watercolour® by Prue Bishop, 70 x 50 x 3.5 cm S01, 2014. Digital.

Prue Bishop explains "This winter scene of ice and cold was encaptured on a December evening on the way up to Grindelwald, Switzerland. The sun was setting on the Wetterhorn and I stopped the car to check for ice on the road. The Schwarze Lütschine river, so called because it rarely sees any sun, was frozen solid."

This image is an exquisite artwork created using the Sculptural Watercolour technique, which uniquely combines the fluidity of traditional watercolor with three-dimensional textures to bring the scene to life. The painting captures the breathtaking beauty of the Schwarze Lütschine and Wetterhorn region of Switzerland, a renowned alpine landscape known for its dramatic contrasts and natural splendor.

In the foreground, the snowy terrain is rendered with flowing, sculpted layers of watercolor, creating a dynamic sense of movement in the icy streams and drifts of snow. The interplay of soft blue, gray, and white hues, enhanced by the sculptural technique, gives the snow an almost tactile quality, as though it could be touched and felt.

The middle ground is dominated by a dark, dense forest of evergreen trees, their forms created with expressive, textured brushstrokes that emphasize the depth and shadow of the landscape. The contrast between the rich, dark tones of the trees and the luminous snow enhances the painting's dimensionality, immersing the viewer in the alpine setting.

The background showcases the iconic Wetterhorn peak, its majestic summit glowing in warm amber and golden tones as if kissed by the light of sunrise or sunset. The sculptural watercolors highlight the ruggedness of the mountain, with intricate textures that mimic its natural contours. The glowing mountain contrasts beautifully with the pale blue sky, painted with smooth, ethereal gradients that evoke a sense of tranquility.

This painting masterfully blends fine artistic detail with the innovative Sculptural Watercolour technique, capturing not only the visual beauty but also the tactile essence of this iconic Swiss alpine region. The result is a captivating piece that feels as immersive as it is serene, celebrating the dramatic interplay of light, texture, and color in nature.
