The Bossons Glacier and Mt Maudit, Sculptural Watercolour® by Prue Bishop, 50 x 70 x 5.5 cm, F37, 2012

On the road to Chamonix, the Glacier des Bossons commands attention, a once-mighty river of ice flowing from the Mont Blanc massif. This Sculptural Watercolour® captures its dramatic landscape, showcasing the delicate balance between the glacier, surrounding peaks, and the warming climate that has dramatically reshaped the region over centuries.

🏔 The Changing Landscape of the Alps

The glacier, once towering over the valley floor, has receded dramatically over time. The brown tones at the painting’s base mark where a vast ice cave existed in the 1970s and 1980s—now long melted away. Just 200 years ago, the Bossons Glacier reached nearly to the valley, with immense blocks of ice forming a striking natural barrier.

In the background, Mont Maudit and the Aiguille du Midi stand in contrast—majestic, towering peaks that have witnessed generations of change. The former Olympic ski jump once lifted athletes to these heights in 1924, a time when the glacier’s size was still formidable.
